Information source and data on threat assessments relating to violent extremism

John made this Official Information request to New Zealand Security Intelligence Service

Response to this request is long overdue. By law New Zealand Security Intelligence Service should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.

From: John

Dear New Zealand Security Intelligence Service,

On page 21 of the Security Threat Environment published in 2023 (https://www.nzsis.govt.nz/assets/NZSIS-D...), the SIS claims that "A very small number of known individuals continue to adhere to FMVE ideologies in New Zealand" and that "White Identity-Motivated Violent Extremism (W-IMVE) continues to be the dominant IMVE ideology in New Zealand."

I am requesting the source of information (body of work) that supports these claims and the data (statistical or otherwise) that validate the claims.

In addition, given the crossover between the two apparently distinct forms of VE (FM and W-IM), for example homophobia and anti-Semitism, I'm requesting the methodologies that are used to analyse the VE of each respective distinction (FM and W-IM) that prove the validity of the data set that supports the abovementioned claims.

Yours faithfully,

John

Tçnâ koe,

Further to our email of Monday 4 September, we require confirmation of eligibility before we are able to accept your request. If you do not provide us with proof of eligibility by Tuesday 12 September, we will be unable to accept your request at this time. However, you would be welcome to re-submit your request with the required evidence of eligibility at any time.

We ask for assurance that a requester is eligible to make a request under section 12 of the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) before proceeding with requests. The requirement to provide assurance is unrelated to the question/s being asked. The assurance we seek is that which is enough to make clear that you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident or are in New Zealand. One way to do this is to provide supporting documentation like a copy of a New Zealand driver licence, or passport, or utility bill. This could be emailed directly to us via [NZSIS request email].

If you do not want to provide evidence of your eligibility to make a request to us directly, you are welcome to contact the Office of the Ombudsman and provide confirmation of eligibility to them, or ask FYI.org to make a request on your behalf (refer to “Can I make an OIA request using a pseudonym?” on https://fyi.org.nz/help/privacy). Once we are satisfied that your request meets the requirements under section 12(1) of the OIA we will be able to proceed.

If you are not already aware, you may be interested in guidance by the Office of the Ombudsman about making requests online. This guidance is available at: https://www.ombudsman.parliament.nz/site....

You may complain to the Inspector-General of Security and Intelligence if you feel you have, or may have been adversely affected by any act, omission, practice, policy, or procedure of an intelligence and security agency. Their contact details can be found at: https://igis.govt.nz/.

Ngâ mihi,
NZSIS
