Post-grad entry into MBChB through Bachelor of Science (major in psychology)

Manpreet Kaur made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

The request was partially successful.

From: Manpreet Kaur

Dear University of Auckland,

This year, I have completed 1 year of Bachelor of Health Science and completed all the required courses to get into MBChB, however, my GPA didn't fit the requirement. Next year, I plan on applying for MBChB through Bachelor of Science (major in psychology) post-graduation.

I understand that my GPA at the end of 3 years for Bachelor of Science degree needs to be quite high. Therefore, I have a few questions regarding how I can achieve a high GPA and general questions about post-grad entry into MBChB. It would be greatly appreciated if you could answer the following questions.

1. Approximately how high does my GPA need to be?

2. When looking at the GPA for post-grad entries, is the GPA looked at for all 3 years individually or combined for all 3 years? e.g if I didn't do so well in one course of one year, then that would affect my GPA for the year, but overall if the GPA for 3 years is combined it may not have any affect at all.

3. There are a couple of subjects that may be easier to achieve a higher grade in than others, thus what subjects within the major of psychology would be advisable for me to take to help me achieve a higher GPA?

4. Likewise, what subjects within the major of psychology would be advisable for me to avoid taking to help me achieve a higher GPA?

5. What is the rate of post-grad entry from Bachelor of Science (majoring in psychology) into MBChB specifically?

Yours faithfully,
Manpreet Kaur

Dear Manpreet,

I refer to your request of 8 December 2023. Some of your questions are
requests for advice rather than requests for official information under
the Official Information Act 1982 and accordingly some of the University’s
formal responses under the OIA may not be helpful to you. We suggest that
you go through the University’s Student Hubs for advice about your
studies: [1]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/students/s...

“1. Approximately how high does my GPA need to be?”

This is not a request for official information held by the University.
However, see attached a document provided by the University under the OIA
setting out GPA and other statistics relating to MBChB entry for
2017-2022.

“2. When looking at the GPA for post-grad entries, is the GPA looked at
for all 3 years individually or combined for all 3 years? e.g if I didn't
do so well in one course of one year, then that would affect my GPA for
the year, but overall if the GPA for 3 years is combined it may not have
any affect at all.”

The MBChB limited entry selection criteria for 2024 entry states the
following for graduate MBChB applicants:

“Following interview, a rank order of applicants based on their academic
performance (the final grades achieved in the qualifying programme),
performance in all sections the UCAT-ANZ test and interview performance is
established at a meeting of the Medical Admissions Subcommittee. Places
will be offered to the highest-ranking applicants until the limit is
reached. NOTE: Graduate applicants who are due to complete their degree in
the year of application, must provide finalised results no later than 30
November in the year of application.”

“3. There are a couple of subjects that may be easier to achieve a higher
grade in than others, thus what subjects within the major of psychology
would be advisable for me to take to help me achieve a higher GPA?”

“4. Likewise, what subjects within the major of psychology would be
advisable for me to avoid taking to help me achieve a higher GPA?”

These are not requests for official information held by the University. We
suggest that you go through the University’s Student Hubs for advice about
your studies: [2]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/students/s...

“5. What is the rate of post-grad entry from Bachelor of Science (majoring
in psychology) into MBChB specifically?”

The University does not hold the requested statistics. This part of your
request is refused under section 18(g) of the OIA.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely,
