K Thompson made this Official Information request to Statistics New Zealand
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for K Thompson to read recent responses and update the status.
From: K Thompson
Dear Coronial Services of New Zealand,
Please can you tell me for the last five years in New Zealand have all deaths been registered at the time of death and are deaths currently being registered at time of death, or has there been or is there a delay in registering deaths, for instance due to coronial investigations?
Please let me know how many delays in registration of death there have been per death in New Zealand per month for the last five years.
How long is the delay after death before the deaths are registered?
Please let me know the reasons for delay in registration of deaths, if that has been occurring.
How long does it take for deaths to be investigated and a report to be completed?
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
K Thompson

Subject: Transfer of your Official Information request - When are deaths
registered
Tçnâ koe K Thompson
I refer to your official information request dated 18 December 2023 for
information on when deaths are registered in New Zealand.
On 20 December 2023 we asked you to clarify part five of your request,
being:
How long does it take for deaths to be investigated and a report to be
completed?
We have not heard back from you about this. We have been in touch with the
Ministry of Justice who have agreed to accept the transfer of this part of
your request. They have advised they will interpret this request to be
deaths requiring investigation as Coroners Court cases, and therefore the
request to be for information on Coroners Court case timeliness. You will
hear further from the Ministry of Justice concerning part five your
request.
On 21 December 2023 we let you know that we were transferring Parts 1-4 of
your request to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) as this
information is not held by us but is believed to be held by DIA. These
parts of your request were officially transferred on 17 January 2024. You
will hear further from DIA concerning parts 1-4 of your request.
All parts of your request have now been transferred as required by section
14 of the Official Information Act.

Subject: Re: Clarification of your Official Information request - When are
deaths registered
Tçnâ koe K Thompson
I refer to your official information request dated 18 December 2023 for
information on when deaths are registered in New Zealand.
We have transferred the first four parts of your request to the Department
of Internal Affairs (DIA) as this information is not held by us but is
believed to be held by DIA. In these circumstances, we are required by
section 14 of the Official Information Act to transfer your request.
You will hear further from DIA concerning these parts of your request:
Please can you tell me for the last five years in New Zealand have all
deaths been registered at the time of death and are deaths currently being
registered at time of death, or has there been or is there a delay in
registering deaths, for instance due to coronial investigations?
Please let me know how many delays in registration of death there have
been per death in New Zealand per month for the last five years.
How long is the delay after death before the deaths are registered?
Please let me know the reasons for delay in registration of deaths, if
that has been occurring.
On 20 December 2023 I contacted you to seek clarification of this final
part of your request, being:
How long does it take for deaths to be investigated and a report to be
completed?
Please see the email below. When we have heard back from you we will
likely transfer this final part of your request to the Ministry of Justice
as this informaiton is not held by Stats NZ.

Subject: Clarification of your Official Information request - When are
deaths registered
Tçnâ koe K Thompson
Thank you for your OIA request, acknowledged below. In order to assess
your request, and to identify what agency will be best to respond to you,
we would like to clarify the last part of your request:
How long does it take for deaths to be investigated and a report to be
completed?
By “investigation” do you mean ‘Coroner’s investigation’ and by “report”
do you mean ‘Coroner’s Findings’? Providing this clarification will
enable us to transfer this part of your request to the correct agency.
Please let me know as soon as you can as we will need to complete the
transfer within ten working days of receiving your request.
Please also note, any clarification or amendment of a request is
considered to be a new request for the purpose of calculating the maximum
statutory timeframe for response—see section 15(1AA) of the Official
Information Act.
Thank you for your help.

Could you please clarify with question one what you mean by delay – eg. do you mean delay caused by the coroner? or a delay caused by the funeral director notifying us after the 3rd day? Please advise.
Thankyou

Subject: Coroners Court case closure times OIA request
Dear Ministry of Justice and FYI.org,
Thank you for your response to my OIA 109160 on 20 February 2024.
As you noted in your above letter:
I am advised that Stats New Zealand attempted to clarify your request in
December 2023, however they did not receive a response. In order to
respond to your request, the Ministry has interpreted ‘deaths to be
investigated’ to mean Coroners Court cases. Coroners Court cases are
investigations into the deaths that are reported to the coroner, in
accordance with sections 13 and 14 of the Coroners Act 2006: those that
appear to have been without known cause, self-inflicted, unnatural,
violent, or medically unexpected. The Ministry has also interpreted
‘report’ to mean the coroner’s findings or certificate issued at the
closure of the case. Therefore, the Ministry has interpreted your request
to be for information on Coroners Court case closure times.
In response to your request, please see Table 1 attached. Table 1 provides
the average age in days of Coroners Court cases at closure for the 12
months ending 31 December 2023.
As your request did not specify a date range, the Ministry has provided
the most recently available calendar year end data. Should you be
interested in further information on Coroners Court case timeliness, you
have the option to make another OIA request to the Ministry. In order to
provide the most useful information for you, it would be helpful for you
to specify the date range you are interested in seeking information on.
Yes, please, can you provide Coroners Court closure times for the years
1990 to the most recent data you have, under the New Zealand Official
Information Act. Can you please break down the closure times by the
months of these years.
Under the NZ OIA can you also provide any data recorded by the Coroners
Court, or by Statistics NZ or other agency, whether any deaths have been
attributed by the Coroner to any type of vaccine or medical injection,
including the MMR, the flu or the Covid vaccines/injections.
Thank you,
K Thompson
