Dear requester,

I refer to your request of 28 March 2024. As consultations necessary to
make a decision on your request are such that a response cannot reasonably
be given within the original time limit, the University has extended the
time limit for your request under section 15A(1)(b) of the OIA. The new
maximum time limit for the University’s response is 28 May 2024; we will
respond to your request as soon as reasonably practicable. You have the
right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are dissatisfied with
this extension.

Yours sincerely,

Dear requester,

I refer to your request of 28 March 2024. The University’s response
follows:

Dedicated spaces on Campus and in Accommodation

In Accommodation we provide various spaces that support student identity
and individuality. All residences offer single gender floors or apartments
or pods depending on the level of demand from incoming students. Some
residences offer the option of Pasifika living spaces and floors including
O’Rorke Hall and we offer optional Kaupapa Māori floors at Waipārūrū and
Grafton Halls. Some residences, where there is demand, also offer
‘Rainbow’ or LGBTQ+ living spaces. In addition, and upon request, we will
create alcohol free and under 18 specific floors or pods. We try to
accommodate to students’ diverse needs where we can.

Across our Campuses the University and Students Associations provide the
following types of spaces.

Access to dedicated spaces

Accommodation: Given these spaces are homes, student residents can have
guests and invite friends to their living spaces within reason (in line
with all our accommodation spaces)  and afterhours guests are accepted
upon approval from the Resident Manager and resident team members (again
this applies to all living spaces in all our residences).

Campus spaces: There is no system to enforce or monitor access other than
for the Terence O’Neill Centre for students with disabilities which is
swipe card enabled for students registered with our Disabilities Services.

Reasons for providing dedicated spaces

The University of Auckland, Waipapa Taumata Rau, has a student population
of close to 45,000. This large group of students has diverse interests and
needs.  The University responds to these social, health and wellbeing,
exercise, study, and religious interests and needs with dedicated
facilities, spaces and support.  We have designated rooms across the
University for multiple teaching, research, study and extra-curricular
purposes. We are proud of the community we have created for students and
the support we provide for their success. The University community is open
and welcomes students, their friends and whānau.

Requests for communications about the implementation and continuance of
these spaces

Official information requested under the OIA must be specified with due
particularity (under section 12(2)). If, after considering the
University’s response above, you wish to request communications about the
implementation and continuance of specific spaces, please specify which
spaces you wish to enquire about. As stated in the table provided above,
many of the dedicated spaces provided by the University have been
established for decades – please note that, where the University cannot
provide information requested under the OIA without substantial collation
or research, we may have to refuse it under section 18(f) of the OIA.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.
