I refer to your request of 18 May 2024 for information about how animals
are sourced by the University. The University’s response follows.

“I request the information regarding how all the animals are acquired by
the university,
ie…farms, social media, those gifting free animals or selling on trademe
or other websites,
As well, could you please clarify whether those that you acquire the
animals from are informed whether or not these will be used by the
university,”

Information about how the University uses animals in research and testing,
including frequently asked questions, is publicly available on our website

Most animals used at the University are bred within our own facilities.
Farm animals may be purchased from local farms or animal producers. Wild
animals may occasionally be housed at the University for short-term
research. Some animals are imported from facilities dedicated to breeding
and supplying laboratory rodents and rabbits. This follows strict import
regulations and shipping standards. We are transparent about the use of
the animals with any persons/entities we acquire animals from about our
purpose for doing so. The University does not acquire animals from members
of the public gifting or selling animals on social media or trademe or
similar websites.
