Official Information Act request: Wahine Māori Leaders in Law Firms Conference 
 
Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 on 1 July 2024 to the 
Ministry of Justice. Specifically, you requested:  
 
On the 17/06/2023 the Minister of Justice at the time, Kiri Al an attended the Wahine 
Māori Leaders in Law Firms Conference, between 14:00 and 17:00. 

Please provide all texts, emails, letters, invitations, reservations, and any other 
correspondence relating to this event and Al an's attendance. 
Please provide the name of the venue the event was held at and where Former 
Minister Al an attended the event. 
 
On 19 July, the Ministry transferred part of your request, namely the part relating to emails of 
the former Minister, to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), under section 14 of the Act. 
You can expect a response from DIA in due course. 
 
In response to the remainder of your request, we identified one email dated 1 June 2023 
with the subject “Re: Minister Allan – Speech”. The email is attached. Some information has 
been withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the Act, to protect the privacy of natural persons. In 
accordance with section 9(1) of the Act, the Ministry has considered the public interest in 
making available the information being withheld and determined that it does not outweigh the 
need to withhold the information at this time.

Minister Allan has been invited to give a speech to a number of wahine Māori leaders in the law firm. 
They are meeting on Waiheke Island from 16-18 of June and staying at Onetangi Apartments.  We
would welcome the attendance of the Minister if she is able to fit it in.  In particular we are keen to hear
from her about her journey in the law and advocacy in the political sphere.   You will recall we booked
this last year but it was cancelled due to Covid.
