The request was successful.
From: Josiah
Dear University of Canterbury,
I am writing to request information under the Official Information Act 1982.
Specifically, I am seeking the following information:
1. The average grades for all papers offered by the University of Canterbury in the 2023 academic year.
2. If readily available, the standard deviation of grades for each of these papers.
If you need any clarification or have any questions regarding this request, please don't hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to discuss the request and clarify any points as needed.
Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Josiah.

Kia ora Josiah,
We are currently working on your OIA request. As it stands, there’s a
chance we’ll have to refuse the request under OIA s 18(f), as it’s looking
like the information requested cannot be made available without
substantial collation or research. To demonstrate, here’s a link to UC’s
courses listed by subjects in 2024:
[1]https://courseinfo.canterbury.ac.nz/subj...
Using Engineering Mathematics as an example, it’s a subject with 17
papers. Another subject, Classics, has 26 papers. These are just 2
subjects out of over 100 subjects. While there’ll be huge variance,
there’s potentially thousands of papers in the scope of this request.
As a way forward, is there a specific subject, department, school or
faculty you’re primarily interested in?
Ngâ mihi,
Eduardo Orlando

Dear Eduardo,
Thank you for your prompt response and for outlining the scope of the information requested.
To make this more manageable, would it be possible to limit the request to include only the 100, 200, and 300 level papers offered in the 2023 academic year during Semester One and Semester Two?
Please let me know if this adjusted scope is more feasible. If there are still challenges, I am happy to further discuss and refine the request.
Thank you for your assistance.
Yours faithfully,
Josiah
