From: SocialHousing Portfolio

Tçnâ koe Brendon,

On behalf of Hon Tama Potaka, Associate Minister of Housing, thank you for
your email below dated 29 October 2024.

Solving our housing crisis, including homelessness, is one of the
Government’s top priorities. This includes making emergency housing a
government target and having more social housing to better look after
those who need support.

The mismatch of housing supply with demand for homes has fuelled high
housing costs and contributed to high rates of financial stress and
homelessness. These challenges result in high demand for government-funded
housing, including social housing, transitional housing, and emergency
housing. The costs of homelessness and housing insecurity are significant
and there are immediate and long-term implications for health, education
and social wellbeing.

Alongside existing government programmes, the government has taken
additional steps to address homelessness.

Firstly, the new Priority One Category will aim to move families out of
Emergency Housing and into social housing faster. Children in emergency
housing for an extended period are most at risk of poor health and
education outcomes. This category will prioritise families with children
who have been in emergency housing for twelve weeks or more. Data from
September 2024 shows that 726 families have been supported out of
emergency housing under this category. Of those households were 1,452
children.

Secondly, the Going for Housing Growth programme is part of the
Government’s broader plan to tackle New Zealand’s ongoing housing
shortage. The programme will enable more homes to be built and involves
three pillars designed to improve affordability and address the underlying
causes of the housing supply shortage.

The Government is working on its priorities to deliver better social
housing and support the need to ensure people are being best served and
the best value for money is being achieved.

Thank you again for your email.
