Dear AHB

LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL INFORMATION AND MEETINGS ACT Request: 2024-58

I refer to your email requested dated 11 December 2024 for the following information:

“I would like to request for all the Citizenship Ceremony dates for all city councils of North
Island from December 2024 to December 2025.

I would also like to request what are the criteria and procedures for someone to attend a
ceremony in a place that is not where they usually live. Is there any supporting document
they need to provide?

For example, if someone needs to attend a ceremony in Auckland but they wish to attend the
ceremony in Hamilton (because the Hamilton one is the earliest and they don’t get the
Auckland one before their citizenship application lapse date), what he or she should do?”

Your request was transferred to Carterton District Council from DIA on 13 December 2024.

Your request has been considered under the Local Government Official Information and
Meeting Act 1987 (the Act). My response is in the order of your request below.

Citizenship Dates for Council from December 2024 to December 2025.
From December 2024 to December 2025, we have one confirmed date for a citizenship
ceremony - 04 December 2024. There are no further citizens awaiting a ceremony and
therefore no dates booked yet for 2025. When we reach approximately 6 or 7 citizens
awaiting a ceremony we will book the next date.

The criteria and procedures for someone to attend a ceremony in a place that is not where
they usually live.
As per our MOU with DIA the Council is responsible for accepting any candidates from
outside the Council region being invited to a ceremony which is hosted by Council.

However, regarding the criteria and procedures this question needs to be referred to DIA
because as a Council we organise a ceremony based on the list of people that DIA provide us
with.

If someone wishes to attend the ceremony in Hamilton (because the Hamilton one is the
earliest and they don’t get the Auckland one before their citizenship application lapse
date).
They need to contact DIA and have that discussion.

Please note, the Council proactively publishes LGOIMA responses on our website. As such,
we may publish this response on our website after five working days. Your name and
contact details will be removed.

Thank you again for your email.  You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to review this
decision. You can do this by writing to [email address] or Office of the
Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.

Yours sincerely
