Misleading data regarding Road Cycling claims.

Ian Guy made this Official Information request to Accident Compensation Corporation

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Ian Guy to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Ian Guy

Dear Accident Compensation Corporation,

According to this press article

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/rotorua-daily...

It is stated that in the year 2023 there were 2706 ACC claims for 'road cycling' - this would suggest that every day at least 6 claims are made in relation to an accident involving a road cyclist; in comparison the article states there were 596 for mountain biking.

Please can you provide some detail as to how the figure of 2706 was calculated?

Is this based on entries as per the ACC claim forms?

How many of these were actually involving 'road cyclists' as opposed to say, children falling off a bicycle in a playground?

How many of these were as a result of a motor vehicle striking a road cyclist?

I feel the way the figures presented within the article may provide a grossly misleading perception of risk

Yours Sincerely

Ian Guy
