Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 27 February 2025.
My response to each part of your request can be found below.
1.
I would like to obtain an overall incident report for the Mangawhai/Northland Natural
Disaster Response on 26/1/25
The local council own and lead the disaster response in such incidents. The role Police
play can vary depending on the seriousness of the event, immediate emergency
response required and the capability of the council lead response team.
In this case the council did an excellent job in rolling out their response and Police
although involved in the emergency response and preservation of life, were very much
about maintaining law and order, ensuring the security of the damaged and therefore
vulnerable homes, restricting access to some areas, supporting, and enabling al the
contractors engaged by the council and trust and confidence building by having a highly
visible presence.
Kaipara District Council led the response to this natural disaster and would hold the report
you seek, therefore this part of your request is refused under section 18(e) of the OIA,
as Police do not hold this report.
We have formally transferred this part of your request to Kaipara District Council.
2.
I would also like to request the police units/callsigns (both Northland and Auckland
Waitemata units) that responded to the overall incident (names and personal info of
responders can however be redacted
The following callsigns for the Northland and Auckland/Waitemata units that responded to
the overall incident are:
REA, REN, RES, OWI, VWI,VWO, VWS, WJR1 – 6, WJS, GWR, GWR2, KEN, WJY
3.
And what roles police played in the incident?
Please refer to my response to Question 1.
