Dear New Zealand Security Intelligence Service,
I am a New Zealand citizen.
Can you provide guidance or information for Security Clearance Vetting staff on how medical cannabis use affects security clearances? Specifically, I’m looking for details on applying for a clearance while having a medical cannabis prescription, as well as what happens if someone with an existing clearance is prescribed medical cannabis.
Yours faithfully,
Ben

Tçnâ koe,
Before we begin processing your request, we require more information to establish your eligibility to make a request under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
Per Section 12 of the OIA, to be eligible to make a request you must be:
• a New Zealand citizen
• a permanent resident of New Zealand
• a person who is in New Zealand
Please send documentation that confirms your eligibility to make an OIA request to [NZSIS request email]. Stating that you are eligible in words does not satisfy the criteria. To prove eligibility you could submit a scanned copy of a New Zealand driver’s licence or passport or evidence of residency in New Zealand, such as a utility bill with your name/address.
It may also be of use to you to read the Protective Security Requirements (PSR) Adjudicative Guidelines that the NZSIS vetting process uses which includes information about the use of drugs. Guideline D covers information about drug use and may answer your request.
Ngâ mihi,
NZSIS
