Please provide information about access ramps built on footpaths to access commercial or council buildings in Whanganui.

Information should include : drawings of the ramps, special conditions required by council, permissions provided by owners of underground utilities, any council correspondance with the access ramp installer.

This request is specific to access ramps installed some time after construction of the related building has been completed rather than access ramps built as an integral part of the original building.

Dear Ms Hobson,

I refer to your official information request dated 11 March 2025 regarding
access ramps.

* Please provide information about access ramps built on footpaths to
access commercial or council buildings in Whanganui.

* Information should include: drawings of the ramps, special conditions
required by council, permissions provided by owners of underground
utilities, any council correspondance with the access ramp installer.

* This request is specific to access ramps installed some time after
construction of the related building has been completed rather than access
ramps built as an integral part of the original building.

Ramps may be one part of a building consent application for an alteration
to a commercial building to comply with upgrades for accessibility,
therefor the information would sit within a broader consent. Council
cannot search and extract 'ramp' information from its Consent data.
Consent's for ramps 'on their own' are rare. We would ask that you get
back in touch with us, or possibly speak with a member of our Building
Control Team directly to clarify or refine your request so that we can
provide you with the specific information you are looking for. In the
meantime relevant information regarding conditions required by legislation
can be found in the following Act's - which can be searched online.

- Section 112 Alterations to existing buildings (Building Act 2004)

- Section 118 Access and facilities for persons with disabilities to and
within buildings (Building Act 2004)

- New Zealand Building Code: D1 Access Routes

- New Zealand Standard: NZS 4121:2001 Design for access and mobility -
Buildings and associated facilities

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at

If you wish to discuss this decision with us, please feel free to contact
