Supporting evidence for claims made on Lets Talk About Suicide Safely hosted by Nigel Latta
Maria Bradshaw made this Official Information request to Television New Zealand Limited
Television New Zealand Limited did not have the information requested.
From: Maria Bradshaw
Dear Television New Zealand Limited,
The programme Lets Talk About Suicide Safely was promoted as providing facts rather than opinion. I am requesting copies of supporting evidence for a number of statements Nigel Latta and Annette Beautrais made and references to research studies cited by Beautrais.
The statements in question are:
1. Those working in suicide prevention come across many cases where a newspaper story about suicide is found next to the body of the deceased in cases of completed suicide.
2, That studies show 60% of those making medically serious suicide attempts and completing suicide are depressed at the time of their attempt or death.
3. That medical treatment reduces suicidal behaviour.
4. That untrained support group facilitators cause harm to those they are supporting.
Yours faithfully,
Maria Bradshaw
