Double-bunking and sexual assault
Mark Hanna made this Official Information request to Department of Corrections
The request was successful.
From: Mark Hanna
Tēnā koutou,
I would like to request the following information:
1. Broken down by prison, the number of prisoners currently kept in double-bunked cells who have
a. been convicted of a sexual crime.
b. had allegations of sexual assault made against them while in prison.
Please release this information in spreadsheet format, preferably CSV or XSLX.
I understand that the information requested in part 1b may not be recorded, as sexual assault incidents are recorded as part of the “serious assault” category. If this information cannot be provided, please instead provide the same information for serious assault, rather than sexual assault.
2. Any guidelines, documents, or communications regarding how prisoners subject to allegations or convictions of sexual assault should be housed with respect to other prisoners.
If any part of my request is unclear, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
If any of the information that I have requested is unavailable or would be difficult to retrieve, but similar information might be readily available, I would be happy to discuss altering or refining my request.
Nāku, nā,
Mark Hanna

There are several URLs in that PDF which, because it's a scanned image rather than text, cannot be clicked and have to by typed by hand. For convenience, here they are:
http://www.corrections.govt.nz/resources...
http://www.ausstats.abs.gov.au/ausstats/...
http://www.corrections.govt.nz/resources...
It's unfortunate that Corrections has not released the data in the format I specified, nor have they given a reason why this was not done as required under the OIA. Thankfully there are relatively few numbers so transcribing them by hand won't be difficult, and I expect it was a simple oversight. Nevertheless, I will be adding this to my ongoing complaint with the Ombudsman regarding the extreme lateness of this request.

2017-08-22 - I received an acknowledgement of receipt of my request from the Department of Corrections
2017-09-19 - I sent a reminder to the Department of Corrections that this was the last of the allowable 20 working days
2017-09-19 - I received an acknowledgement of receipt of my reminder from the Department of Corrections
2017-09-19 - I received a notice from the Department of Corrections that they needed to extend the timeframe of my request by 20 working days
There has been no further correspondence to date.
I have attached a zip file containing all correspondence I have had with the Department of Corrections regarding this request. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if any part of my complaint is unclear, or if you require any more information from me.
