Dave P made this Official Information request to New Zealand Customs Service
The request was successful.
From: Dave P
Dear New Zealand Customs Service,
I have some questions that arose after my cousin arrived in New Zealand
I understand if you come to New Zealand with a large enough purchase from overseas you must pay GST.
How much in GST has the New Zealand customs service collected in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and this year so far if possible
What does customs do with the arrival cards once they have them?
Yours faithfully,
Dave P

New Zealand Customs Service
Dear Dave P
Thank you for your email below.
As the information you request is in the public domain there is no need for Customs to treat it as a request for information under the provisions of the Official information Act 1982.
In response to your request please note the following.
The amount of GST collected by Customs in any financial year is reported in the New Zealand Customs Annual Report. For the year ending 30 June 2017 simply Google "New Zealand Customs Annual Report 2017". Just change the year details for any other years you would like the information for. You may find other useful information in the reports as well.
The arrival cards are collected from Customs at the border air and sea ports on a daily basis and sent to Statistics New Zealand.
Trust this assists.
