Dear Department of Conservation,
I am involved with a dog lovers group. I am interested in finding out statistics around the death of kiwi in Northland, so that we can develop strategies to minimise the risk of harm to kiwi, whilst also minimising harm to dogs and dog owners.
On 16 December, 2016, Mr Andrew Blanshard, Acting Operations Manager, Pewhairangi - Bay of Islands Department of Conservation, submitted to the Far North District Council’s consultation process on the dog control bylaw and policy.
In this document, it was stated that "Kiwi have been killed by dogs being walked on public roads when the dog finds a bird close to the roadside” (P4).
Would you please provide the supporting evidence for this statement.

DOC wrote back within the timeframe, showing that 4 kiwi have been recorded by them as having been killed on the roadside in the last 30 years.
