Statistics regarding the deceased donor Kidney waitlist
Olivia made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health
The request was successful.
From: Olivia
Dear Ministry of Health,
I am writing to request statistics regarding the kidney waitlist in 2017. Websites such as Kidney Health NZ and Organ Donation NZ are vague, and ANZDATA only report the Australian statistics.
Specifically, I would like to know:
- the number of people who were active at the start of 2017
- the number of people taken off the list during that year
- the number of people who died on the list that year
- and the number of people who were active at the end of 2017
Yours faithfully,
Olivia Anderson
Ministry of Health

Dear Ms Anderson
Please find below the responses to your official information request which
was transferred to New Zealand Blood Service by the Ministry of Health on
7 May 2019.
People active on the list at the start of 2017 – 491
People taken off the list during 2017 – 241
Number of people who died on the list during 2017 – Unfortunately NZBS
does not hold this data
People active on the list at the end of 2017 – 451
During the course of the year, patients can be temporarily taken off the
list due to ill health, surgical procedures, extended holidays etc. as
they are at that time unavailable to be considered for transplant.
I hope these answers are helpful.
Regards
Sam Cliffe
