Rape reports to police

Brenda made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was refused by New Zealand Police.

From: Brenda

Dear New Zealand Police,

Please can you provide total number of rape crimes reported to NZ police, per year, for the last 10 years.

Please also include how many resulted in someone being charged with a crime as a result.

Please also include aggregate numbers of the reasons nobody was charged as a result of a report. e.g. lack of evidence.

Please also include in the number any cases where a victim reported a rape, but it isn't official classed as a "report".

For clarity: rape includes all sexual assault.

Yours faithfully,

Brenda Wallace

New Zealand Police

Dear Ms Wallace

Thank you for your request received on 7 November 2013 under the Official
Information Act 1982 (OIA) relating to rape and sexual assault crimes.

Official Statistics on recorded offences and apprehensions, including
those for rapes and sexual assaults are publicly available on the
Statistics New Zealand website (www.stats.govt.nz). They can be broken
down by year and how it was resolved (ie. prosecution, warning).
Therefore, I refuse your request under section 18(d) of the OIA as the
information is publicly available.

Also, Police does not produce statistics on the reasons why charges are
not laid as a result of a report. Therefore, I also refuse these portions
your requests under section 18(g) of the OIA as the information requested
is not held.

Although for the reasons above none of the information you have sought has
been provided, I trust my response is still helpful. As you may already be
aware, you have the right under section 28(3) of the OIA to seek a review
of my handling of your request by the Office of the Ombudsmen.

Yours sincerely
