Teach NZ Expert Panel Process for selecting scholarship winners
S. Paurini made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education
The request was refused by Ministry of Education.
From: S. Paurini
Dear Ministry of Education,
OIA Request/Privacy Act Request
My Teach NZ scholarship application was assessed by an external selection panel comprised of experts who scored my application against six selection factors.
One selection factor for my application was language Pronunciation. The difference between scores needs to be justified.
My reo Maori pronunciation is natural and shows who I am.
I've been involved with my whanau, hapu and tribe my entire life. I know how to pronounce our language.
I find it unusual being scored on my own language by people who don't know me or my lineage.
But most importantly, as an educationist, I'm concerned that pronunciation is allocated 20 points while qualifications and communication are only allocated 10 points each in a field by that is tasked with formally educating children.
Request - wide divergence in scores
Why did one expert score my application 4/20 for my pronunciation of Maori words while the other expert scored 16/20 for pronunciation of Maori words?
Yours faithfully,
S. Paurini
