Peter Ellis Apology
Ross Francis made this Official Information request to Radio New Zealand Limited
The request was partially successful.
From: Ross Francis
Dear Radio New Zealand Limited,
On 24 June 2003, a petition requesting a Commission of Inquiry into the Peter Ellis case was presented to Parliament. Among the hundreds of petitioners were two former Prime Ministers, 12 former Cabinet Ministers, 28 MPs (from every party in Parliament), 12 law professors, 10 Queen’s Counsel, a retired High Court Judge and four psychology professors. On 25 August 2003, while the Justice and Electoral Select Committee was considering that petition, RNZ broadcast an interview with "Nathan", a young man who indicated that he had been a victim of sexual abuse whilst at the Christchurch Civic Creche.
RNZ was subsequently ordered to pay Mr Ellis' legal costs and pay $5000 to the Crown. In which newspapers did the Broadcasting Standards Authority order that RNZ publish an apology to Mr Ellis? On what date(s) was the apology published in each newspaper? Please supply me with a copy of the apology that was published.
Please also provide me with a copy of any complaints or correspondence received by RNZ in 2003 about the airing of the Nathan interview.
Yours faithfully,
Ross Francis

Dear Mr Francis
Please find attached a copy of the statement that was published on October
18, 2015 at the BSA's direction. The newspapers it was published in are
detailed in the BSA's decision 2004-115 which is available at
[1]www.bsa.govt.nz.
As is recorded in the BSA's decision, Mr Ellis complained through his
lawyers. Two other individuals also complained, but as they did not refer
their complaints to the BSA we must respect the privacy which the
complaints process affords to thosecomplainants.
We trust the above is of assistance to you. As we are required to do, this
message is to also advise you that our response to your request can be
referred to the Ombudsman’s Office for review under s 28 (3) of the
Official Information Act if you wish.
Kind regards
George Bignell| OIA Inquiries Coordinator
