Please provide the calculation / methodology that is used to determine the fee charged to customers when a book is returned to the library late and advice received on whether this fee reflects the actual cost (if available).

Wellington (80c / day) is the only other library in the country that’s more expensive than Chirstchurch (70c / day). The overwhelming majority have either no fees or charge 20-30c / day.

I understand subsequent to this request that CCC is now reviewing library late charges with a view of abolishing them which is a great result.

Mr Rodgers left an annotation ()
The cost of processing a returned book would be the same whether the book is late or not.
It is a *penalty* to discourage lenders from holding on to books and denying other lenders from reading the book. Just like there being a penalty fee if you stay too long in a car park and that prevents other drivers from using the park.
(And the Christchurch late fee of 70c/day is cheaper than Wellington's 80c/day).
