Dear KiwiRail,
Waka Kotahi NZTA is suggesting it will be possible to provide improved connectivity at Rolleston for trains between Timaru and the Midland Line when the Hoskyns Road level crossing is closed. What is the nature of the improvements in the Rolleston rail yard that Kiwirail is proposing?
Yours faithfully,

KiwiRail
Good afternoon Patrick.
To answer your query - Waka Kotahi NZTA is suggesting it will be possible
to provide improved connectivity at Rolleston for trains between Timaru
and the Midland Line when the Hoskyns Road level crossing is closed. What
is the nature of the improvements in the Rolleston rail yard that Kiwirail
is proposing?
KiwiRail have been involved in the project development and due to the
signalling complexities with the original proposal, we have identified an
option that will create a small (540m long) yard which allow trains to
pull off the mainline so that the locomotives can run-around to the other
end and run the other way.
The proposed location of this run around is between Hoskyns Road and
Weedons Ross Road which will allow trains from south of Rolleston on the
Main South Line to switch directions at Rolleston and head towards the
West Coast on the Midland Line.
The project is run by Waka Kotahi and is currently at the Programme
Business Case phase. Detailed design is due to start shortly.
Kind regards
Dave
