Dear Ministry of Health,
As this information appears to be missing from your official COVID-19: Case demographics web page (https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-nove...), could you please provide the latest available dataset of the following:
Age and vaccination status of deaths where COVID-19 is officially coded as the underlying cause, where vaccination status is defined as:
Unvaccinated - having had no COVID-19 vaccinations
Single vaccinated - having had a single COVID-19 vaccination
Fully vaccinated - having had two COVID-19 vaccinations
Booster received - having had three or more COVID-19 vaccinations
This dataset should be similar to that already published and contain no personally identifiable information, with one notable difference - the deliniation of the existing reported category "Not fully vaccinated" into two distinct categories, "Unvaccinated" and "Single vaccinated".

As required under the Official Information Act 1982, the Ministry will
endeavour to respond to your request no later than 22 June 2022, being 20
working days after the day your request was received.

Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to the Ministry of Health (the Ministry) on 24 May 2022 for:
“Age and vaccination status of deaths where COVID-19 is officially coded
as the underlying cause, where vaccination status is defined as:
Unvaccinated - having had no COVID-19 vaccinations
Single vaccinated - having had a single COVID-19 vaccination
Fully vaccinated - having had two COVID-19 vaccinations
Booster received - having had three or more COVID-19 vaccinations
This dataset should be similar to that already published and contain no
personally identifiable information, with one notable difference - the
deliniation of the existing reported category "Not fully vaccinated" into
two distinct categories, "Unvaccinated" and "Single vaccinated".”
To protect the privacy of natural persons, including deceased persons, it
is not possible to provide a breakdown of deaths under investigation by
age and vaccination status. Therefore, this information is withheld under
section 9(2)(a) of the Act. I have considered the countervailing public
interest in making this decision and consider that it does not outweigh
the need to withhold at this time.
Vaccination status of deaths related to COVID-19 in Aotearoa is publicly
available at:

Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to

I am getting sick of the stock standard reply that they cant give vaccination status data as it would breech privacy. Your vaccination status is PRIVATE MEDICAL information. No one should know PRIVATE MEDICAL information of individuals unless they are their medical professional so why would it give anyone anymore clues to who the people are?
I have read so many requests for this information and this is the reply everytime.
Just supply the public with transparent, clear data.

Altering the request and removing age as a criteria, would the ministry be able provide a dataset of deaths where COVID-19 is officially coded as the underlying cause, by vaccination status where this status is defined as:
Unvaccinated - having had no COVID-19 vaccinations
Single vaccinated - having had a single COVID-19 vaccination
Fully vaccinated - having had two COVID-19 vaccinations
Booster received - having had three or more COVID-19 vaccinations
In other words, the request is for 4 numbers totalling deaths for each status.
If not able to fulfil the request for these 4 numbers, could you explain how this sum total per vaccination status could result in a breach of privacy of natural persons under 9(2)(a) of the Act?
