Director General of Health statement regarding Covid-19 vaccine status relative risk
Mr T. Baker made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health
The request was successful.
From: Mr T. Baker
Dear Ministry of Health,
In previous request (ref: H2022008814), Ministry of Health referred to report titled “Inequities in COVID-19 Mortality” as the basis for the Director General's statements on 27 July 2022 relating to Covid-19 vaccine status relative risk of death. I presume the report is that issued by MoH on 30 September 2022 (https://www.health.govt.nz/publication/c...).
Please clarify where in the report it confirms the Director General's statement that "people not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 - that is they've had less than two doses - are six times more likely to die if they catch COVID-19 compare would someone who has had at least one booster dose, that's once you adjust for all other factors. For people under 60, this risk is even higher, more than 13 times greater for those who are unvaccinated or less than two doses compared with someone who's boosted" was accurate.
Yours faithfully,
T. Baker

Tçnâ koe Mr T. Baker,
Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to Manatû Hauora (the Ministry of Health) on 7 November 2022 for:
“In previous request (ref: H2022008814), Ministry of Health referred to
report titled “Inequities in COVID-19 Mortality” as the basis for the
Director General's statements on 27 July 2022 relating to Covid-19 vaccine
status relative risk of death. I presume the report is that issued by MoH

statement that "people not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 - that is

dose, that's once you adjust for all other factors. For people under 60,
this risk is even higher, more than 13 times greater for those who are
unvaccinated or less than two doses compared with someone who's boosted"
was accurate.”
Page 15 of Inequities in COVID-19 Mortality confirms the Director
General’s statements on 27 July 2022 here: “After restricting deaths data
to 1 March onwards to further examine the effect of vaccination on case
fatality risk, we found that compared with those who had fewer than 2
doses, those who had 2 doses had a fully adjusted risk ratio of 0.52 (95%
CI 0.44–0.62), and for those who had had 3 or more doses, this was 0.22
(95% CI 0.19–0.25).”
For under 60-year-olds, the COVID-19 vaccine status relative risk estimate
was 0.11 (95%CI 0.06-0.20). This information is provided on page 16 of the
report.
Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
contacted by email at: [1][email address] or by calling 0800
802 602.
