MBChB Graduate GPA above 9

T C made this Official Information request to University of Otago

The request was successful.

From: T C

Dear University of Otago,

Previous requests regarding to the minimum and maximum GPA of successful applicants each year revealed that the maximum GPA for graduate applicants are over 9. Under the university's grading system, a 90-100% is considered a GPA of 9. Therefore, I kindly request the explanation of achieving a GPA higher than 9.

I would request a response to whether the degree in which the graduate applicants have influence the decision of their entry.

Under Section 12 of the Official Information Act 1982, I am a New Zealand citizen and located in New Zealand.

Yours faithfully,
Tania

I believe the requests which reference GPAs exceeding 9 in the MBChB context refer to the weighted GPA calculated specifically for MBChB entry purposes. The details can be found at https://www.otago.ac.nz/healthsciences/s.... That page also links a spreadsheet calculator for weighted GPA (with additional sheets contained in that file providing annotated examples for degrees of various lengths): https://www.otago.ac.nz/healthsciences/o....

The maximum weighted GPA, for MBChB entry purposes, seems to be 10.5. That can be achieved by getting an A+ in at least 240 points worth of 200-level papers (weighted 1.0x) and at least 120 points worth of 300+-level papers (weighted 1.5x). Essentially, the reason weighted GPA in the MBChB context can exceed 9.0 is the 1.5x weighting given to papers at 300 level or higher.
