Level of Atrazine in drinking water
Athina Andonatou made this Official Information request to Taumata Arowai–the Water Services Regulator
The request was successful.
From: Athina Andonatou
Dear Taumata Arowai–the Water Services Regulator,
As a New Zealand citizen I request the following information:
Q1) Please provide the dates and titles of all risk/benefit analyses undertaken which reviewed the data/science of risks and benefits of atrazine in drinking water?
Q2) Please provide all the reports/reviews/advice which was used to determine and justify what the 'safe level' of exposure to the herbicide atrazine in the drinking water is?
As the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Simon Upton stated in his media release of the report Knowing what’s out there: Regulating the environmental fate of chemicals "“Finding out after chemicals have caused irrevocable impacts on the environment is too late.” And not just to the environment but also the people who eat from the land, the animals and plants they eat and fish from the sea which are at the mercy of atrazine. https://www.murihikuregen.org.nz/latest-...
Q3) Is atrazine one of the untested chemicals referred to in the above article in which it is stated "... over 30,000 chemicals approved for use across the country, but only around 200 chemicals are routinely tested for".
Finally, much scientific research shows atrazine as an endocrine disruptor, with some findings showing that it induces "...complete feminization and chemical castration in male African clawed frogs" https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.09...
Yours faithfully,
Athina

Another "we have no idea what we're doing". Thank you for confirming for me the importance of making sure I have a quality water supply separate from the town supply.
