National Land Transport (Road) Noise Map
S. Zeng made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for S. Zeng to read recent responses and update the status.
From: S. Zeng
Dear Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency,
I would like to request the most recent National Land Transport (Road) Noise Map in geodatabase format. Specifically, the ESRI geodatabase mentioned as output in 6.0 in this report, or the latest version since the report's release: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/Highways...
I would also prefer the map be released along with other supplemental information through the NZTA's Open Data Portal (https://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/open-...). Though if it will slow down the release of this data, please send it to me instead.
Yours faithfully,
S. Zeng

From: S. Zeng
Dear Waka Kotahi NZTA,
I write to provide the purpose of my request as requested. As someone working in a research support capacity in a tertiary institution with data analysis experience, I intend to perform exploratory analysis on the data, including the noise pollution effect of different types of transport infrastructure. I reserve the right to share any findings with the wider public. I am requesting the information for all of New Zealand, though I am more interested in Auckland. I also personally live in an area with significant traffic noise, and want to know if this issue is recognised by NZTA modelling, and what other areas are affected by the issue.
With sustained public scrutiny on housing supply and transport projects in recent years, my analysis of the data can inform the public discourse. Analysis of the dataset can provide insights for better housing and transport policies, and address issues with transport noise.
To my knowledge, there is no publicly available information on road noise in NZ, which heightens the importance of releasing this information.
I do not require any personal information, such as property owner details.
On the balance, I believe disclosure of the information is in the public interest.
Yours sincerely,
S. Zeng

Dear Vanessa,
Thanks for your response and your work on this. It is disappointing that I still haven’t been able to access the data I’ve requested since 29 July. Nevertheless, I look forward to the 2023 SCON report being released in this month, with the geodatabase I’ve requested. If the dataset is not released I will have to seek an appeal with the Ombudsman.
It would be helpful if you can point to a section of Waka Kotahi’s website where this data will be shared.
Yours sincerely,
S. Zeng

Thank you for your patience while we work to prepare the Social Cost of
Noise (SCON) project information and noise contour maps for public
release.
Unfortunately we have experienced some delays while we work towards
getting the information ready for release. We still plan to release the
information, however we are now estimating the end of February 2024 before
it will be available. We apologise that it will not ready within our
originally-indicated timeframe. We expect the maps to be made available
via our open data portal (see
[1]https://opendata-nzta.opendata.arcgis.com/), but will confirm this with
you once published and available.

We are still working on ensuring the map data meets our current Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) standards before it is published alongside the
SCON report. We apologise for the delay in these being published and will
provide you with a further update by the end of March 2024.

Further to our prior email, we are advised the SCON report which was to
accompany the modelled noise contours is still some months away. However,
we are continuing work on finalising the GIS data for the modelled noise
contours. We expect this to be available on our website in the next few
weeks and will update you when this happens.
