Decision to issue apology for Israel lights
Jim Bankster made this Official Information request to Auckland Museum Trust Board
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Jim Bankster to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Jim Bankster
Dear Auckland Museum Trust Board,
I want to understand who decided to issue an apology following some scum protesters desecrated the memories of recently slain Israeli children, women, and men by marching on the Museum upon its appropriate show of support.
I want to understand the rationale for this pathetic back peddling and whether the Museum has been taken hostage by a loud and aggressive minority.
Who makes these decisions and what explanation do you provide for bending the knee to some loud and uninformed Hamas sympathisers?
I have rarely felt this level of disgust, your initial show of support was good, your subsequent castration was pitiful to watch. I will never step into this institution again.
Yours faithfully, Jim Bankster

Auckland Museum Trust Board
Dear Jim,
Official information request for information on release of an apology on
16 October 2023
I refer to your official information request dated 17 October for
information on the decision to issue an apology following the lighting of
the Museum on 15 October.
Q1. I want to understand who decided to issue an apology.
In response to considerable feedback from staff and the wider community,
and following a meeting with Museum managers and members of the Executive
Team, the Chief Executive in consultation with the Board Chair, decided to
release a public statement. This statement acknowledged the depth of
feeling around the decision to light the Museum and apologised for the
distress and hurt that the approach caused to members of the community.
Q2. Who makes these decisions?
Ultimately all decisions about Museum operations are made by the Chief
Executive. We have determined that due to the level and nature of feedback
that Museum staff have received directly, there is a very real risk of
harassment and harm to persons involved. We are declining to release to
you the titles and roles of some of the persons involved in this decision
in in accordance with LGOIMA to maintain the effective conduct of public
affairs through the protection of employees from improper pressure or
harassment (s.7(2)(f)(ii) LGOIMA).
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely,
Laura Skerritt
