Tçnâ koe,
Thank you for contacting the Department of Internal Affairs. You have
contacted us during the annual legislative closedown period of public

During this period Official Information Act processing is suspended.
If you are making a new Official Information Act (OIA) request for
information held by the Department, we will respond to you after OIA
processing resumes on Tuesday the 16th January 2024. You can check the
time limit for the Department’s response in the [1]Ombudsman’s OIA

Department of Internal Affairs
Good afternoon Adam,
Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), included in train, which was received during the annual legislative closedown period of public service OIA processing (24 Dec - 15 January inclusive).
Your request is extremely broad in scope, since you have listed no specific period or topic of interest, and you include 'all Ministers or officials subject to the Act'. It would be administratively unreasonable for the Department to attempt to transfer your request to all Ministers or officials subject to the Act. This comprises more than 100 agencies, entities and Ministers.
REQUESTING INFORMATION HELD BY CURRENT MINISTERS AND ALL OFFICIALS SUBJECT TO THE ACT
-If you would like to request information about correspondence between current Ministers and Cameron Slater, please make your request directly to the individual Ministers you are interested in. You can find contact information for all current Ministers on the beehive website by googling 'beehive, NZ Ministers'. You can also find information from former Minister's Diaries in the public domain here: https://beehive.govt.nz/search?f%5B0%5D=...
- If you would like to request information about meetings between officials and Cameron Slater, please make your request directly to the individual agencies and entities you are interested in. You can find contact information for these on their websites.
REQUESTING INFORMATION ABOUT MEETINGS BETWEEN DIA OFFICIALS AND CAMERON SLATER
Please clarify the time period you would like to enquire about regarding any meetings between Department of Internal Affairs officials and Cameron Slater.
Please note that the Department is considering partially refusing your request under section 18(f) of the Act in respect of former employees, as undertaking a search of meeting history for staff previously employed at the Department would necessitate substantial collation and research which would be likely to disproportionately impact the normal operation of the organisation. This is because the search tool will pick up any mention of the word 'cameron' or 'slater' in the meeting body or attendees, and this can reasonably be expected to result in a very high volume of irrelevant correspondence that must be manually reviewed in order to exclude it. If you are able to identify a specific short time period and business group or former employee, this may sufficiently resolve the substantial nature of the collation.
REQUESTING CORRESPONDENCE AND MEETINGS BETWEEN FORMER MINISTERS AND CAMERON SLATER
The Department of Internal Affairs is able to provide access to information of former Ministers, however your request at its current scope is likely to be refused under section 18(f) of the Act in respect of former Ministers, due to substantial collation and research, as without refinement this will include more than a decade of information of many dozens of Ministers.
If you would like to refine your request to the Department regarding information of former Ministers, please confirm and I will connect you with the team responsible for that information so that you can learn more about how the process for accessing former Minister's information works and agree a scope that is reasonably answerable.
Note that if you would like to pursue this avenue, it will be treated as a separate request. This is because collation of departmental information and collation of information held by the parliamentary service involves quite different processes led by different parts of the organisation and keeping these requests separate ensures the most efficient response timeframes in each.

Subject: OIA022 Notification of transfer to all incumbent Ministers
OIA2324-0495 - Correspondence and meetings with blogger Cameron Slater
Good afternoon,
The Department of Internal Affairs has received the attached request from
a requester using the FYI.org.nz website and referring to themselves as
'Adam'.
The Department sought refinement of the scope of Adam’s request, and Adam
has refined his request, confirming he wishes to make the below request
(only) to all incumbent Ministers of the currently sitting government, for
the period since the time they took up their portfolios.
1. Please provide all correspondence between government ministers and
Cameron Slater (formerly of Whale Oil blog and subject of the "Dirty
Politics book).
2. Pease provide any information with regards to any meetings between Mr
Slater and any government ministers.
As Adam has made clear that he would like his request to be made to all
incumbent Ministers, the Department must transfer his request to each
Minister for individual response.
Due to the number of transfer recipients in this case, transfer is being
undertaken as a collective notification to Ministers, rather than via
direct consultation between Minister’s offices. This notification
approach is on an exceptional basis, and direct consultation between
Ministers offices will continue to be the transfer approach observed by
the Department under normal circumstances. Should any Minister receiving
this notification have already received the same request from Adam
directly, this transfer notification will have no effect.
Please accept this email as confirmation of transfer under section 14(b)
of the Act, as the information requested is not held by the Department of
Internal Affairs, but is believed to be held by and more closely connected
with the functions of each incumbent Minister of the Crown.
I attach the original request from Adam, the clarification sought with
Adam, and the notification to Adam of this transfer, for your reference.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision to transfer. Information about how to make a complaint is
available at [3]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or Freephone 0800 802 602.
