From: Housing Portfolio
Dear James,
Thank you for your email on 20 February 2024, requesting the following
under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
“E hiahia ana ahau ki te kape o nga tohutohu katoa mo te Maori kua tukuna
atu ki Kâinga Ora râua Te Tûâpapa Kura Kâinga”
We have interpreted your request for information on all advice sent to the
Minister on Mâori by Kâinga Ora – Homes and Communities and Te Tûâpapa
Kura Kâinga – the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The Minister
receives a large amount of advice which may include advice on Mâori. To
search for where this may have occurred would require substantial
collation and research. As such your request would likely to be refused
under section 18(f) of the Act, as the information requested cannot be
made available without substantial collation or research.
As such we ask that you narrow the scope of your request, such as by
providing the following:
o more specific keywords around “advice on Mâori” to enable us to narrow
our search, and/or
o clarification on whether you would like a list o advice or copies of
advice the Minister has received.
If we do not receive clarification, your request will be interpreted as
written in your original request. While we will endeavour to respond to
your request as soon as possible, any clarification or amendment of a
request is considered to be a new request for the purpose of calculating
the maximum statutory timeframe for response—see section 15(1AA) of the
OIA.
Kind regards,
Office of Hon. Chris Bishop

Kia ora,
I would like to clarify that I am referring to all correspondence from Chris Bishop or his office regarding the use of te reo Māori. This includes instructions on how Kāinga Ora and Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga should use te reo Māori in communications to the Minister, how they must use it when communicating to the public, and how they must use it when drafting responses on behalf of the Minister's Office (e.g Letters from the Minister).
Yours sincerely,
