ELM medical student inappropriate hospital access
M Belvin made this Official Information request to University of Otago
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for M Belvin to read a recent response and update the status.
From: M Belvin
Dear University of Otago,
ELM2 and 3 students are not permitted access to clinical-experiences or interactions in Dunedin hospital. These aspects of teaching are reserved for ALM+ students who have the appropriate training.
I am requesting to know if there have been any ELM students in recent years, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 who accessed areas of the hospital that they were not permitted to do so.
If there were students who did this I would like to know what punitive action was taken to ensure this would not happen again. This is in regards to the students themselves and any other students or staff who allowed for such an event to occur. I also wish to know how the patient may have been informed or managed.
As this would be a breach of professional conduct and patient rights, I do see that a student who carried out an action like this would be suitable to continue training as a health professional unless they received ongoing monitoring and significant evaluation.
To clarify, I am not asking for the name of any student or worker, but rather confirmation of any such event as outlined above.
Kind regards,
B Melvin

I refer to your request for information dated 14 June 2024 made under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). You have requested information in relation to University of Otago ELM students accessing areas of Dunedin Hospital that they were not permitted to.
The Act requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no later than 20 working days after the date your request was received. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit. We are therefore writing to notify you, pursuant to section 15A of the Act, of an extension of the time to make our decision in respect of your request, by a further seven working days - to 24 July 2024.
This extension is necessary to allow for consultations necessary to make a decision on your request. We thank you for your patience - we will endeavour to respond sooner if possible.
If you are not satisfied with our extension of time, you have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
Ngā mihi
Kelsey
