Funds allocated to investigate Waste to Energy

Jane Reed made this Official Information request to Kaipara District Council

The request was successful.

From: Jane Reed

Dear Kaipara District Council,

The 2024 Economic Development Strategy, on page 36, states the below key strategy, as a high priority
"Undertake research to understand opportunities for Waste to Energy processing"

Please advise funds allocated for the research into Waste to Energy processing?
Please advise the method of research being undertaken?
Please advise if any external research organisation or company has been engaged to undertake this research?

Please advise if Mayor Craig Jepson has signed or agreed in principle to any Memorandums of Understanding with either South Island Resource Recovery Ltd or China Tianying Incorporated?

In a Council Meeting, 26 June 2024, a resolution was made & documented to no longer engage Council time and funds in the Waste to Energy Plant, and the descion was made to leave the Waste to Energy Plant, in the private sector. Please advise why the Waste to Energy Plant, is still in the Economic Devlopment plan as high priority with Rate Payers funds being used to investigate Waste to Energy?

Yours faithfully,

Jane Reed

Further to your information request I have been advised the reference to
Waste to Energy has been removed from the Economic Development Strategy.
Any waste to energy project would be entirely privately funded and led.
Council’s only responsibility if it goes ahead would be from a regulatory
perspective.  As such there are no funds allocated, nor has any research
been undertaken and there are no signed agreements.
