From: Ash
Dear University of Auckland,
I am following up on the request I made earlier. If statistics around the percentage of students obtaining a grade is unavailable, the number of students obtaining a certain would suffice.
Yours faithfully,
Ash

University of Auckland
Dear Ash,
I refer to your request of 29 August 2024. The University’s response
follows.
“I am writing to request detailed statistics for the following engineering
papers in the specified semesters. Specifically, I would like to obtain
the following information for each paper, headed with the relevant
semester:
Median mark
Mean mark
Lower quartile
Upper quartile”
The University does not hold final mark statistics. Grades, not marks, are
the University's final measure of academic assessment. Marks are used for
initial calculation of grades (see
[1]https://cdn.auckland.ac.nz/assets/auckla...)
but grades may be subsequently changed for various reasons, such as
aegrotat/compassionate consideration or academic misconduct. This
constitutes a refusal of this part of your request under section 18(g) of
the OIA.
“Percentage of students scoring each grade Number of successful
completions”
The number of students achieving each grade and successful completions for
2023 taught courses and 2024 Semester One courses have been made publicly
available through University OIA responses at the following webpages:
1. [2]https://fyi.org.nz/request/28215-grade-d...
2. [3]https://fyi.org.nz/request/27761-average...
The University does not hold these individual grade figures as percentages
but you can calculate these using the spreadsheets published on the
webpages above. This constitutes a partial refusal of your request under
section 18(d) of the OIA, as the information requested is publicly
available. If your request seeks information about student performance in
courses with fewer than seven students, that information is instead
withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the OIA to protect their privacy.
The grade distributions for the requested Summer School 2024 courses are
attached.
You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.
Yours sincerely,
Landon Watt
