I refer to your request of 25 September 2024 about the University of
Auckland’s Recreation Centre. The University’s response follows.

 

“1) Are there plans to stop water coming out of these ports on to
pedestrians?”

Yes. The three ports are part of the stormwater system for the Recreation
Centre, they are overflow outlets and should only discharge water in the
rare event that the main stormwater system is blocked. There has been a
mistake made during construction which has resulted in water discharging
every time it rains not just when the stormwater system is blocked. We are
aware of the issue and confirm work is already underway to rectify the
defect.  

 

“2) Could I please see correspondence relating to the approval of this
anti-pedestrian feature being part of the final design of the building?

 

As explained above, the water discharging through overflow outlets every
time it rains rather than only when the stormwater system is blocked is
the result of a mistake made during construction rather than part of the
final design of the building. Accordingly, the University does not hold
the requested correspondence and this part of your request is refused
under section 18(g) of the Official Information Act 1982.

 

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Currently, the Symonds Street side of the new recreation centre has three
ports in the side of the building that dumps water on to pedestrians when
it is raining, and then for many days after it has stopped raining.

 

1) Are there plans to stop water coming out of these ports on to
pedestrians?

 

2) Could I please see correspondence relating to the approval of this
anti-pedestrian feature being part of the final design of the building?
