P2P Line speed
Isaac Morrison made this Official Information request to KiwiRail
The request is waiting for clarification. If you are Isaac Morrison, please sign in to send a follow up message.
From: Isaac Morrison
Dear KiwiRail,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to inquire about the current line speed for the section of track between Papakura to Pukekohe. Additionally, as part of the Rail Network Rebuild, will the line speed increase on this section of track? If not, what infrastructure and track geometry changes would be sufficient to increase the line speed on this section of track and would it be possible to do without significant deviation from the current corridor? If that was to occur, what could the line speed be increased to?
I understand some if not most of this information might not be available unless a detailed study has been done. If this is the case, then it would be great to see those studies. If such studies have not occurred, it would be great to see some very rough estimates for what such improvements would look like based on other similar improvements.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Isaac Morrison

Dear KiwiRail,
I am just wanting to check that the original message was revived as nearly 20 day, the mandatory deadline in which you must provide a response in approaching and I am yet to receive any acknowledgement.
Apologies if there was an error and you did not receive it, however, I hope to receive a response soon.
Yours faithfully,
Isaac Morrison

Subject: RE: Official Information request - P2P Line speed - response
Apologies Isaac - trying this again as first attempt bounced back.
I have asked around about your query and we are not aware of any studies
that have been undertaken on improving line speed specifically (or if that
is something could occur within existing corridor/no extra land).
The Auckland Programme Business Case – which can be found here -
[1]Auckland Rail Programme Business Case | KiwiRail considered it only as
a possible opportunity to explore at a later date, and in the context of
adding additional tracks.
The Rail Network rebuild project is focussed on improving the civil aspect
of the existing railway via replacement of worn-out foundation and
formalising the drainage. It is not tasked with line speed improvements
and alignment changes which would allow for higher lines speeds. Rather
it’s about improving the resilience of the network and removing Temporary
Speed Restrictions (TSRs) which does have the effect of speeding up
services overall.
I think you’ve had a previous response on TSRs etc.
Hope that helps, please get in touch if you have any further questions.
Cheers
Dave

Kia ora Dave,
Thank you for your reply; I received this one. I suspected that the focus would be on improving civil works. While I understand that the answer likely involves cost considerations and waiting for potential improvements in passenger rail service between Auckland and Hamilton, is there a specific reason why line speed hasn't been improved? Wouldn't it be beneficial, especially with electrification, to increase line speed along this section of track, particularly with future plans for express services?
Additionally once the TSR have been removed what will the line speed on this section of line be?
Apologies if some of these questions are a tad ambiguous and I thank you for your time.
Ngā mihi,
Isaac Morrison
