Borer infestation/wood rot on playground equipment

Dear Whangarei District Council,

I am writing to formally request information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA) concerning the timber playground equipment at Pohe Island and Whangārei Town Basin that has been affected by borer and/or rot.

Specifically, I request the following:

1. All communications between Whangārei District Council and Playground Centre regarding the borer-affected and rotten timber playground equipment at both Pohe Island and the Whangārei Town Basin playgrounds. This includes any emails, internal or third party reports, or discussions related to the identification of these issues and any potential solutions.

2. A breakdown of costs incurred by Whangārei District Council to date for any repairs or replacements related to the borer-affected timber at both playgrounds, including any costs for new or repaired rubber matting associated with the playground equipment repairs.

To ensure clarity in your response, I would appreciate the following:

Format: Please supply the information in electronic format (PDF or Word).

Response Timeline: As per LGOIMA, I understand that the Council is required to respond within 20 working days. Kindly confirm receipt of this request and provide a timeframe for when I can expect the requested information.

I refer to your request of October 10, 2024 for Information about “Timber
Playground Equipment”. Your request was referred to council’s Parks and
Recreation Department and Capital Works Department for consideration and
answers to the following questions:

 

 1. All communications between Whangârei District Council and Playground
Centre regarding the borer-affected and rotten timber playground
equipment at both Pohe Island and the Whangârei Town Basin
playgrounds. This includes any emails, internal or third-party
reports, or discussions related to the identification of these issues
and any potential solutions. Please see the attached file.

 

 2. A breakdown of costs incurred by Whangârei District Council to date
for any repairs or replacements related to the borer-affected timber
at both playgrounds, including any costs for new or repaired rubber
matting associated with the playground equipment repairs. All cost of
the repairs has been covered by the Playground centre and there is a
15-year warranty on the poles so they will be covering all cost until
the warranty is up.

 

The documentation attached represents our best efforts to locate material
relevant to your request. However, the search process is by no means an
exact science it is possible that there may be other items of relevance
that have been unintentionally missed in the search

 

There may be a degree of duplication throughout the collated file, but
double copies are provided in the interests of avoiding missing some
material.
