Tēnā koe Nic

Thank you for your email of 12 November 2024 to the Ministry of Education
(the Ministry) requesting the following information:

Are you please able to provide your apology delivered today in te reo
Māori in an oral and written format.

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act).

The Ministry’s apology at Parliament to survivors of abuse in care, and
their whānau, is available in written format in English and te reo Māori,
as well as Pacific languages, on our website here:
[1]https://www.education.govt.nz/news/abuse....
That part of your request is therefore refused under section 18(d) of the
Act, as the information is publicly available.

The page also contains a video recording of the apology delivered in
English, but no oral translation has been produced, and agencies are not
required to create new information for the purposes of responding to
requests under the Act. That part of your request is therefore refused
under section 18(g) of the Act, as the information requested is not held
by the Ministry, and we have no grounds for believing that it is either
held by, or more closely related to the function of, another department or
organisation subject to the Act.

Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to
review my decision on your request, in accordance with section 28 of the
Act. You can do this by writing to [2][email address] or to
Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.

From: Nic Lane

Dear Ministry of Education,

Thank you for your response and your commitment to ensuring translations were available for the multiple communities affected by government actions.

From what I've seen come out from other ministries, you've set the benchmark for what New Zealanders should expect following events such as these. This demonstrates your commitment to rebuilding trust and ensuring future generations don't suffer the same fate.

Yours sincerely,

Nic Lane
