Track speed

Grady Connell made this Official Information request to KiwiRail

The request was partially successful.

From: Grady Connell

Dear KiwiRail,

I would like to request the current line speeds (if possible on a map) for the Auckland train network between Pukekohe and Swanson including the South, East, Onehunga and Western Lines as well as the line to Mission Bush branch also including if the information is held by KR the line speeds for the Glenbrook Vintage Railway Line.

Yours faithfully,
Grady

Good afternoon Grady

Thanks for your enquiry. I have checked with our team, and there isn't such a map of the line speeds in existence I'm afraid.
While KiwiRail's standard line speed on much of its network is 90 km, the line speeds for the for the Auckland train network branch is variable depending on factors like curves, steep gradients, and service requirements - e.g. if it is a freight service, an AT stopping service or an express.

There are speed boards on the network to indicate the changes in line speed for the particular sections of track.

There will also be localised Temporary Speed Restrictions (TSRs) on sections of the track that can vary from week to week. TSRs, (where a train has to travel at a lower speed over an area of track, due to issues with the track) and Heat40 restrictions (where during periods of high temperature a 40km/h speed limit is imposed in areas where there are track issues, or where track work has just been done) are an established railway management practice that seeks to keep the railway open while managing infrastructure defects and construction/renewal activities.

KiwiRail has been working hard to reduce the scale of both of these restrictions over last year. Prior to Christmas there were about 4.8km of TSRs on the network (Swanson - Papakura) and this has now been reduced to 3.2km.
Similarly, there were about 300m metres of Heat40s across the network, which have now been removed.

Re the Glenbrook Vintage Railway line - we don't hold the line speeds. However I am advised that the operators will have a separate safety case they adhere to (issued by NZTA as the regulator)that will apply to safe operating speeds on the line for vintage machinery.

Kind regards

Dave

Dear Dave Allard,

Would I be able to request the track speed data regardless? Ideally in a PDF or CSV that shows the line speed for the tracks.

Yours sincerely,

Grady Connell
