Response to your request for official information

 

Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to the Ministry of Health – Manatû Hauora (the Ministry) on 14 March
2025 for:

 

“… an unredacted copy of the contract for the supply of the Pfizer Covid
19 vaccines.”

 

The contract between the New Zealand Government and Pfizer is withheld in
full under the following sections of the Act: 

o Section 9(2)(b)(ii) where its release would likely unreasonably
prejudice the commercial position of the person who supplied the
information; and 
o Section 9(2)(ba)(ii), to protect information that is subject to an
obligation of confidence and making it available would likely damage
the public interest. 

  

I have considered the countervailing public interest in releasing
information and consider that it does not outweigh the need to withhold at
this time.

 

However, to address the unprecedented public interest, the Ombudsman
recommended the development of a summary statement with information on the
COVID-19 vaccine procurement process and the nature of the commitments
made by the Government across all the contracts.
