Tax avoidance
Caroline Evans made this Official Information request to Minister of Revenue
The request was refused by Minister of Revenue.
From: Caroline Evans
Dear Minister of Revenue,
I would like to know the names of the tax avoiding companies that have avoided paying the normal company tax in the last tax year in New Zealand .
I would like to know the procedure used for setting up and maintaining an offshore account, as NZ is a tax haven, as evidenced in the Panama Papers.
Yours faithfully,
Caroline Evans

From: Commissioners Correspondence
Good afternoon Ms Evans,
Thank you for your Official Information Act request which was transferred
to Inland Revenue on 6 April 2016. You requested:
1. I would like to know the names of the tax avoiding companies that have
avoided paying the normal company tax in the last tax year in New Zealand
2. I would like to know the procedure used for setting up and maintaining
an offshore account, as NZ is a tax haven, as evidenced in the Panama
Papers.
The wording of your current request means that I am unlikely to be able to
provide you with any information. This is because the secrecy provisions
contained in section 81 of the Tax Administration Act 1994 prevent Inland
Revenue from releasing information relating to individual tax payers. As
such, I will be unable to provide you with the information you have
requested in the first part of your request. I also need to clarify the
information you are requesting in the second part of your request.
If possible, can you please provide me with an appropriate telephone
number to call you so I can assist you with making a request that will
enable us to provide you with the information you are looking for. I will
be more than happy to email you following our discussion to have a written
record of the conversation. You can contact me by email at
[email address].
Thank you,
