Dear Shane Bidois,
Thanks for your reply.
Im assuming Metservice is still collecting rainfall data as usual, so could you advise the reasons for the 'data becoming unavailable', including policy reasons, financial reasons, lack of staff
You say 'some of the data', could you be more specific if that relates to rainfall gauges, their locations.
Yours sincerely,
S Curtis

Dear S Curtis
The cumulative rainfall maps are generated using observational spot data and computer model-derived data, the latter of which fills in the gaps between the observations using a statistical algorithm.
The statistical algorithm is no longer effective and is producing extreme values, and the matter is with our IT specialists. They have advised me that until the root cause is known it is difficult to estimate when the maps will be available.
Hopefully the matter will be resolved in the short term, as the reason for the maps not becoming available is due to neither policy, financial nor a lack of staff.
Kind regards,
Shane Bidois
