Statistics on seclusion
Alex Harris made this Official Information request to Waikato District Health Board
The request was partially successful.
From: Alex Harris
Dear Waikato District Health Board,
I would like to request the following information under the OIA:
* The number of mental health patients currently detained in seclusion units
* How long each has been detained for. I'm happy for this to be aggregated into bands (e.g. less than one month, 1 - 3 months, 3 - 6 months, 6 months - 1 year and so on) in order to protect privacy. If this would result in a refusal for substantial collation and research because there are more than a hundred such detainees, I am happy to limit the statistics to those detained for more than six months.
I would prefer to receive an electronic response. Queries about
this request will be automatically forwarded to me by the
fyi.org.nz website.
With regards to s12 of the OIA, I am an NZ citizen and in NZ.
Yours faithfully,
Alex Harris

Waikato District Health Board
Dear Alex
Thank you for your request for information in relation to the use of
seclusion at Waikato DHB Mental Health and Addictions Services.
Our Mental Health Service does not have a “seclusion unit”, although there
are designated areas within the inpatient facility where seclusion may be
utilised, if required. The prolonged periods of seclusion you refer to in
your request are not applicable.
In the first instance it may help to refer you to information currently
publically available. The Annual Report of the Director of Mental
Health includes detailed information on the use of seclusion in Mental
Health inpatient facilities and provides information on the duration of
seclusion events which may help with context for your request. You can
view the latest report here: [1]The Office of the Director of Mental
Health Annual Report 2014 | Ministry of Health NZ
I hope this report will provide the answers to your queries. However, if
following review of this information you would like to revise your
request, we would be happy to respond.
Kind regards
Carolyne Grainger|PA to the Executive Director & Director of Clinical
Services/DAMHS|Mental Health and Addictions Service|Health Waikato
