Details of concerns from anonymous complaint about our worksite
Noel Reid made this Official Information request to WorkSafe New Zealand
The request was refused by WorkSafe New Zealand.
From: Noel Reid
Dear WorkSafe New Zealand,
Last week, WorkSafe visited our worksite, following an anonymous complaint. The site is 7 Lewis Lane, off the Coatesville/Riverhead Highway, north of Albany. The WorkSafe inspector is Mr Neil Latimer.
Safety is paramount at our site. Most of the people onsite have been working here for about 2 years, so we feel we know them well. We go to a lot of trouble, my wife in particular, to ensure we have a happy, friendly worksite; she even puts on special morning teas or lunches from time to time.
I would be disappointed – not angry – if anyone working on site had a safety issue they didn’t raise with us. Disappointed with myself because I’d feel we hadn’t communicated well enough with the people working here.
Likewise with the neighbours, most of whom we communicate with from time to time; several have our phone # as well as email address. I would expect any of the neighbours would be comfortable raising any concerns with me.
I was therefore very surprised to learn you’d had an anonymous complaint, and became intrigued that it apparently covered numerous concerns, most of which have been established by Mr Latimer as being unfounded.
I appreciate there are situations where complainants need to be anonymous; however, in a situation such as ours, I’m bewildered by what's happened.
I believe it is reasonable for you to provide details of the concerns that anonymous complainant had, and request that you do so.
We live in a free country, and I believe you need to “strike a balance” between preserving the confidentiality of complainants when it’s necessary, and my request for information about what the concerns were. I’m old enough to know what it was like in East Germany before the Wall came down; and don’t ever want to experience that here.
Yours faithfully,
Noel Reid
