Preservation of Retired Locomotives
Iain Palmer made this Official Information request to KiwiRail
The request was successful.
From: Iain Palmer
Dear KiwiRail,
Following the tender for disposal of the DBR fleet and the announced pending retirement of the EF fleet.
Has there been any consideration for preservation of an example from each locomotive class and/or any work towards preserving a unit?
Furthermore, KiwiRail still has a single DA locomotive on its books, DAR517, has there been any consideration about its preservation?
Yours faithfully,
Iain Palmer

KiwiRail
Good afternoon Iain
We refer to your request for information on 26 June 2017 in which you ask:
“Following the tender for disposal of the DBR fleet and the announced
pending retirement of the EF fleet.
Has there been any consideration for preservation of an example from each
locomotive class and/or any work towards preserving a unit?
Furthermore, KiwiRail still has a single DA locomotive on its books,
DAR517, has there been any consideration about its preservation?”
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act).
Following the tender for disposal of the DBR fleet and the announced
pending retirement of the EF fleet.
Has there been any consideration for preservation of an example from each
locomotive class and/or any work towards preserving a unit?
The DBR class are surplus to the business. The process has started for
their disposal and KiwiRail has no plans to preserve an example of this
locomotive class.
The EF class is still in use and at this time and no consideration has
been given toward KiwiRail preserving an example.
Furthermore, KiwiRail still has a single DA locomotive on its books,
DAR517, has there been any consideration about its preservation?
DAR has been condemned due to its degenerated condition and is awaiting
dismantling. KiwiRail has no plans to preserve the example of this
locomotive class.
KiwiRail’s usual process is to advertise for the disposal of the
locomotives. In the past we have found there is often an interested buyer
amongst heritage organisations.
Under s28(3) of the Act, you have the right to seek an investigation and
review of this response by way of complaint to the Ombudsman. Refer to
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz for more information.

Official Correspondence Unit
