Advanced stop boxes: enforcement and promotion
Anita Easton made this Official Information request to Wellington City Council
The request was successful.
From: Anita Easton
Dear Wellington City Council,
What activities have you undertaken to enforce the appropriate use of advanced stop boxes in Wellington? This includes activities undertaken jointly with the regional council, the police, other local territorial authorities or other agencies, individual enforcement activities. I would appreciate any statistics you capture about these activities, such as warnings for other vehicles using the advanced stop boxes.
What enforcement or communication activities are planned, or currently in planning?
Yours faithfully,
Anita Easton

Hello Anita,
Thank you for your request.
I have spoken with the relevant Council teams regarding this, and have a response for you.
The Council are not involved in policing the advances stop boxes. Although we are responsible for the road markings, the boxes are policed by a combination of the Police and NZTA.
I would suggest contacting NZTA directly as they would be able to provide you with more information on the current status of the boxes.
Kind regards
Chris

Dear Chris,
That's so much for your quick response.
Can I just check, in your response you say that enforcement is the responsibility of the Police and NZTA, which makes sense to me and I shall follow up with them :) Who is responsible for promotion and communication? The second part of my question was about both enforcement and communication/promotion activities. I had guessed this might be a WCC responsibility, if it isn't, is it also with NZTA?
Yours sincerely,
Anita Easton

Wellington City Council
Hello Anita,
Thank you for coming back to us and confirming the information you were
seeking.
I have spoken again to the team who are responsible for the advanced stop
boxes from a Council perspective, and reiterated that you were looking for
information on both enforcement and communication/promotion activities.
While the team have confirmed that they are not currently promoting the
advanced stop boxes, or providing any communication about them, they have
suggested that you take a look at the following search through the Council
website -
[1]https://wellington.govt.nz/search?q=adva...
this search will take you to all of the Council information relating to
the advanced stop boxes, including the Council meeting information from
the adoption of them. In addition, you will also find information produced
by the Council on 'cycling tips and tricks', and information for motorists
on how to treat the advanced stop boxes.
At the moment, the Council is waiting for further communication from NZTA
with regard to promotion of the advanced stop boxes.
If I can be of further assistance, please contact me.
Kind regards
Chris
