Hi Thai ,
1. Life expectancy at each District Health Board over the period
from 2012 to 2017. Also, it would be great if the data are detailed in
ethnic groups.
This data would be a customised data job and we would send a obligation
free quote and a turnaround time based on a hourly rate of $155.00 +gst
. If this is what you need please email or call us and I will send it
to the Population Analysis group.
2. Data on prevalence of smoking, drinking, diabetes, and obesity at
each DHB from 2012 to 2017.
I suggest you try the Ministry of Health for this data -We did ask about
Smoking in the 2013 Census but only Smoking and only that year all the
other topics are covered by Ministry of Health.

Dear Joanne Alexander,
Thank you very much for your response.
According to what you mentioned in the previous email, I have to pay for collecting data on life expectancy at each DHB ($155.00 per hour). Could you please inform me the estimated costs incur when processing my request ? (the coverage of data is from 2013 to 2016).
Thank you very much,
Yours sincerely,
Thai Quoc Khanh

Dear Joanne Alexander,
Following previous email, I would like to confirm that I have narrowed down the coverage of data ( 2013 - 2016, instead of 2012 - 2017). Also, as far as I know, the recent census was in 2013; I just wonder that how can the data on life expectancy for each year (at each DHB) could be obtained without census.
Beside the estimated costs, could you please inform the expected time to process the data.
Thank you very much and hope to hear from you soon,
Yours sincerely,
Thai Quoc Khanh

Hi Thai,
Thanks for your enquiry. In regard to your first request
1. Life expectancy at each District Health Board over the period
from 2012 to 2017 (2013-16 as mentioned in your replied email). Also, it
would be great if the data are detailed in ethnic groups.
We could only derive life expectancy at DHB for total New Zealand, but not
ethnic groups. This is because we don’t have ethnic population in between
census years. This needs to be done after the 2018 Census results
available next year. We have official series of DHB’s estimated resident
population published each year. See [1]here for our latest publication.
Death (registrations) information are [2]available quarterly.
The estimated quote for the job would be 2 hours @ $155+GST. And the
expected delivery time would be within 5 working days. This is subject to
change due to the final job specifications.
Please let me know if you’d like to proceed the request.
Regards
Helen

Hi Thai,
Sorry for the late reply.
Sure we'll proceed your request. I'll still need to check with our life expectancy expert what years of DHB LE tables we could produce before I send final quote for your job. She is away today. Is it OK to give you an update tomorrow?

Dear Helen He,
Thank you very much indeed.
I agree with your job descriptions. As I am not good at statistic method, what I would like to know is just the annual data on life expectancy (LE) of each DHB (for example, LE at Auckland DHB from 2013 to 2017 were 87, 88, 85, 89 and 87, respectively) . Therefore, it would be helpful if you can add necessary notes related to the data provided.
Also, please instruct me how to make a payment.
Thank you very much for your dedicated assistance,
Yours sincerely,

Hi Thai,
Thank you very much for your patience.
Find attached your requested life expectancy by DHB. Please be aware of the slight modification to agreed 5 year age groups - for age group 0-5 years, life expectancy are calculated at age 0 and 1-4 years instead. This is because that life expectancy at birth has a very different pattern compared to other ages.
We first estimate the mortality rates using deaths and population at risk over a 3 year period, it's done using two lots of 3 year period. For example mortality rate at 2012 are derived using deaths data between 2011 and 2013 and population at 2012, and deaths data between 2012 and 2014 and population at 2013. The reason to estimate mortality rates this way is to give more precise estimates and smooth the estimated mortality rates. Then life expectancy will be derived accordingly.
Please see New Zealand period life tables: Methodology for 2012–14 (http://archive.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_...) for detailed description of methodology used to derive mortality rates and life expectancy.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Dear Helen He,
Thank you very much for your efforts to provide me the necessary information.
The data are detail and cover the period required. Basing on data provided, I found LE is calculated for each age group and each sex (male, female). Accordingly, take Auckland DHB over the period 2015 - 2017 for example, LE of female (age 0) and male (age 0) in 2016 were 83.09 and 79.76, respectively. As I understand, these are the overall LE of female and male at Auckland DHB.
However, what I am actually looking for is the LE of total population at each DHB. For example, when comparing LE of New Zealand and the UK, we just use the overall LE. Similarly, if possible could you please show me how to obtain life expectancy for the whole population (regardless of age and sex) at each DHB basing on the detail data provided.
As I am not good at statistics, I am sorry if my explanation is not clear enough.
Again, thank you very much for your dedicate help,
Yours sincerely,
Thai Quoc Khanh

Dear Helen He,
Thank you very much for your quick response
I found that the data is more concise than before and is close to my needs. However, just a little problem as I found that there are replicated values in some periods (except for 2015-2017). For example, over 2014 - 2016, Auckland got two values (81.28469 and 81.29133). If possible, could you kindly explain which is the total life expectancy for Auckland DHB.
Thank you very much for your help,
Yours sincerely,
Thai Quoc Khanh
From: Helen He
Statistics New Zealand
Hi Thai,
As mentioned in the previous emails, the life expectancy are derived using two sets of the 3-year period. Therefore, the estimates are derived for each 3-year period twice. Although the differences are small, but it shows you the uncertainty with different simulations.
I've simplified to one life expectancy for each period by selecting the first period. For example, life expectancy has been calculated using period 2011-2013 and 2012-2014 for period 1, then 2012-2014 and 2013-2015 for period 2, and so on. 2011-2013 will be the total life expectancy supplied for period 1, 2012-2014 will be selected for period 2, and so on.
Really, either estimates will work for you especially if you work on rounded numbers.
Hopefully it makes sense to you. Please let me know if not.

Helen
