Request of towing data for three Tamaki Makaurau police districts

Marcus made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Marcus

Dear New Zealand Police,

It is my understanding that both the Auckland Transport authority and any private towing contractors must notify the police when they have towed a vehicle. Provided that's correct, I'd like to request some historical towing data for use.

At minimum, Auckland Transport indicates that you'll have the license plate number and the location that the car was moved to.

I'd like to request towing data for the three Tamaki Makaurau police districts i.e. Waitemata, Auckland City and Counties-Manukau, ranging back for the last 5 years.

Specifically, the following bits of data if they exist:

- License plate numbers (optional if it's considered disclosable for privacy reasons)
- Location the vehicle was towed to
- Location the vehicle was towed from (ideally a specific address but just a general street is fine)
- Towing operator/entity
- Date and time of the towing event (ideally the time towed and time of arrival at destination but I understand that level of granularity may not be captured)
- Type of vehicle (if captured)

I'm not sure what level of detail is reported to police (aside from license plates and location towed to) so I would expect to not receive any of the above elements if they don't exist.

For the data format, I'd prefer to receive the data in a machine readable format (CSV ideally or XLSX)

Much appreciated,

Marcus

Hi Alison,

Thanks for your response.

Data ranging from August 2016 to August 2019 is perfectly fine so I'll opt for reducing the request to fit within the 5 hour bounds.
