RPAS/Drones - Enforcement - Supplementary Question - re Feb-July 2019
Allen Reynolds made this Official Information request to Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand
The request was successful.
From: Allen Reynolds
Dear Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand,
On August 08, thru FYI, I asked about enforcement actions in respect of drones/RPAS
CAA replied on September 05, with 'RIU RPAS Investigations 20 OIR 70 Reynolds.pdf'
I asked a supplementary question - "but, please confirm that there have been absolutely no enforcement actions for the period March thru July 2019 - that's Infringement Notices, Written Warnings, Prosecutions
my request covered the period 01 January 2017 to 31 July 2019; it just looks weird with nothing for 5 months!"
I now ask this question as a new OIA request
specifically - for the period 10 February 2019 to 31 July 2019, please state how many enforcement actions there were - that's Infringement Notices, Written Warnings, Prosecutions
and, if more than 'none', please provide details, as per your reply 'RIU RPAS Investigations 20 OIR 70 Reynolds.pdf'
thank you
Allen Reynolds

Dear OIA,
no - wrong period - this enquiry is for the period 10 February 2019 to 31 July 2019 ONLY
I requested enforcement data (on 08 August) for the period 01 January 2017 to 31 July 2019
(a previous OIA request)
CAA replied (on 05 September) with 'RIU RPAS Investigations 20 OIR 70 Reynolds.pdf'
where the last entry is 09 February 2019 - a 5+ month gap at the end!
so, on 22 September, with this current OIA request, I asked about that 5+ month gap -
"specifically - for the period 10 February 2019 to 31 July 2019, please state how many enforcement actions there were - that's Infringement Notices, Written Warnings, Prosecutions..."
repeat - this enquiry is for the period 10 February 2019 to 31 July 2019 ONLY
thank you
Allen Reynolds

Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand
Dear Mr Reynolds
Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to the CAA on 22 September 2019 for the following information:
for the period 10 February 2019 to 31 July 2019, please state how many
enforcement actions there were - that's Infringement Notices, Written
Warnings, Prosecutions and, if more than 'none', please provide details.
The information you have requested is attached. Five RPA investigations
were completed by the RIU between 10 February 2019 - 31 July 2019. In
addition, regarding aviation related concerns for that time period:
o 6 letters were sent which could be considered warnings. That is
situations where an individual was identified and there was some
evidence that could likely prove the offence if it were to go to
further.
o 14 educational letters/interventions were sent. These were in
circumstances where the individual couldn't be properly identified or
there didn't appear to be evidence, or the circumstances didn't
warrant a warning. In these situations, individuals might be sent an
educational letter sometimes accompanied by a phone call and
educational material.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review of this decision by
the Ombudsman. Details on how to make a complaint are available at

Dear OIA,
thank you for the information
it seems I got what I requested - 'enforcements' in 'the period'
whilst I actually meant 'enforcements' for 'offences in the period'...
I will be more careful with my wording next time
