Authority under law to carry firearms
Will Pope made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
The request was successful.
From: Will Pope
Dear New Zealand Police,
1) Under what legislation are Police officers able to carry firearms? Specifically, what enables Police to carry firearms where ordinary citizens cannot?
2) Is it theoretically possible for a B-endorsed firearms licence holder to be authorised to carry their pistol in the same way as Police? If so, under what circumstances?
3) Has 2) happened in the past? If so, under what circumstances?
I am a New Zealand citizen and resident in New Zealand.
Yours faithfully,
Will Pope
New Zealand Police

If you don't receive a response by the end of tomorrow, I recommend you lay a complaint with the Office of the Ombudsman. The Official Information Act only allows time limits for requests to be extended for a few specific reasons, and none of these seem to apply for NZ Police's reasons here for not being on time with their response.
